Children Suitable Treks

We specialise in organising treks for families with children of all ages and hiking abilities. Our trek crews always delight in having children with them out in the mountains and make sure that they stay safe while having a fun time.

Ponies to ride and extra porter support can be arranged for children.

CORDILLERA HUAYHUASH
8 DAY MINI TREK

A journey around part of the Cordillera Huayhuash. One of the less physically hard Huayhuash treks with a gentle start, and extra days spent at some campsites to either do a beautiful part / full day hike or just relax at camp and enjoy the spectacular surroundings – maybe play some football with the trek crew, go fishing or read a book.

  • A moderate level trek following around about half of the Cordillera Huayhuash Circuit
  • An easier start with a night camping on the pampa at Huanuco Viejo and visiting the interesting Inca Ruins there, followed by an almost flat first day hiking to Laguna Carhuacocha
  • Two rest days are included at beautiful campsites by the lakes at Laguna Carhuacocha and Laguna Jahuacocha – great for children (and parents) to have a relaxing day, maybe try from trout fishing in the lakes!
  • There are several high passes to cross with up to 6 or 7 hours hiking – so children do need to be active hikers and have good endurance
  • Suitable for active and fit younger children through to teenagers
  • Ponies to ride and extra porter support recommended for younger children

INTI RAYMI SUN FESTIVAL HUAYHUASH
9 DAY MINI TREK

An exciting combination of Inca culture with a sun festival held on a remote pampa at Inca Ruina – and Cordillera Huayhuash hiking – a real treat for families

In July we have a special Huayhuash trek to coincide with the exciting and colourful Inti Raymi Inca Sun Festival held at Huanuco Viejo.  The Inti Raymi was the most important festival in the Inca Empire to worship the Sun God – the Source of life. Thanks are given for the year’s harvest and prayers made for good weather and harvests for the coming year. The festival is celebrated each year on 27 July, and involves some 600 local Inca descendants dancers and actors dressed in traditional Inca costumes.

We stay two nights at Huanuco Viejo so that we can relax and enjoy the atmosphere, colours and excitement of the festival.

After the festival we then continue on to Laguna Carhuacocha to begin the Cordillera Huayhuash Mini trek.

  • A moderate level trek following around about half of the Cordillera Huayhuash Circuit
  • Trek departs Huaraz 26 July, return 3 August
  • Can be made shorter – 8 day trip
  • An easier start to the hiking with two nights camping on the pampa at Huanuco Viejo, a day at the festival, followed by an almost flat first day hiking to Laguna Carhuacocha

LAGUNA JAHUACOCHA SHORT TREK 4 or 5 DAYS

A beautiful short trek into the high Laguna Jahuacocha nestled at the base of the largest Cordillera Huayhuash peaks – a circuit starting at Quartelhuain and looping around to finish in the mountain village of Llamac. A great trek for families to combine with a Santa Cruz 4 day trek and with other travel in Peru – especially to Cusco and either a trek or tour to Machu Picchu

  • A moderate to hard hike at high altitude and a climb to the top of a 4750m / 15584ft pass
  • An easier start to the hiking with two nights camping on the pampa at Huanuco Viejo, a day at the festival, followed by an almost flat first day hiking to Laguna Carhuacocha
  • One rest day is included at the beautiful campsite by Laguna Jahuacocha – great for children (and parents) to have a relaxing day, maybe try from trout fishing in the lake or there are day hike options. Add a day to make a super relaxing family holiday
  • There are two high passes to cross – so children do need to be active hikers and have good endurance
  • Suitable for active and fit younger children through to teenagers
  • Ponies to ride and extra porter support recommended for younger children
