This easy, half-day journey offers stunning views of the Cordillera Blanca and prepares your body for bigger adventures ahead.Discover the secrets of the Wari culture just outside Huaraz.
The Wilcahuain archaeological site is an easy7 km walk on a good path from Huaraz. The ruins date to about 600 to 900 AD and the Wari Empire. The main 3 – story building housed the mummies of the Wari ancestors.
The building is roofed with massive stone slabs and contains a complicated system of ventilation ducts. You will marvel at how they managed to so accurately construct the building and place the massive stone slabs without the aid of modern technology.
Why Wilcahuain is the Perfect Acclimatization Hike
Jumping straight from sea level to a high-altitude lake can be a major shock to the system. Huaraz sits at 3,050m (10,000 ft), and the Wilcahuain hike is the perfect “first step” to safely adjusting your body.
This easy day hike involves a gentle ascent to 3,400m (11,155 ft), allowing you to actively acclimatize without overexerting yourself. It’s the ideal way to get your lungs working, stretch your legs, and significantly reduce the risk of altitude sickness on your bigger adventures like Laguna 69 or the Santa Cruz trek. Plus, you get rewarding views and a dose of history while you do it.
The Wari Culture: A Glimpse into Pre-Inca History
Long before the Inca built Machu Picchu, the Wari (or Huari) Empire dominated the Andes from 600 to 1100 AD. The Wilcahuain Ruins are one of the most important and best-preserved Wari sites in the entire region.
This multi-level stone temple likely served as a ceremonial center or a mausoleum for Wari nobility. On this tour, your expert guide will explain the fascinating history of this pre-Inca culture, pointing out the unique architectural styles and advanced engineering that allowed this temple to survive for over 1,200 years.
