Imagine walking through a vast, golden valley surrounded by glaciated peaks, without the exhausting steep climbs typical of the Andes. The Quillqueyhuanca Valley hike offers exactly that. Known as the “Gateway to the Pucaranra,” this trek is a hidden gem located at the entrance of the Huascarán National Park.
This ancient glacial valley is famous for its gentle terrain, pre-Inca paintings, and stunning high-altitude rivers. It is widely considered one of the best acclimatization hikes in Huaraz for those who want big mountain views without a big physical struggle.
An easy and relaxing hike in the Valley Quebrada Quillqueyhuanca. The trail is almost flat and there are great views of the mountains and spectacular vertical rock walls. Sometimes we have seen condors in the valley. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the sun by the river at the head of the valley. A great hike for everyone – families, children, people looking for a relaxing day out.
A Gentle Giant: Easy Hiking at High Altitude
Unlike the steep switchbacks of Laguna 69, the trail through Quillqueyhuanca is remarkably flat. You start at the valley gate (approx. 3,850m) and walk along the valley floor, following the meandering river.
This gentle gradient allows you to hike for hours, soaking in the altitude, without spiking your heart rate. This is the scientifically perfect way to acclimatize: keeping your body active while avoiding overexertion. It’s an ideal choice for families, nature photographers, and anyone preparing for a major expedition like Huayhuash or Alpamayo.
Ancient History & Mountain Majesty
The scenery here is breathtaking. As you walk deeper into the valley, the massive snow-capped peaks of Chinchey (6222m), Pucaranra (6156m), and Andavite (5518m) loom over you, creating a dramatic contrast with the golden ichu grass and the tranquil stream.
But Quillqueyhuanca isn’t just about nature. Near the trail entrance, we can visit the ancient pre-Inca rock paintings of Nuevo Tambo, offering a glimpse into the early inhabitants of this mystical region. It’s a rare combination of archaeology and alpine grandeur.
