Marian Village Hike: An Authentic Walk Through Andean Life

Time:

3 or 4 hours hike and then we take a car back to Huaraz

Grade:

Easy

Maximum altitude:

3500m

Hiking distance approx:

5kms

While many visitors flock to the busy trails of Laguna 69, the Marian Village hike offers a peaceful, authentic alternative just minutes from Huaraz. This scenic trekking route takes you deep into the heart of the Cordillera Blanca’s rural countryside.

A relaxing and easy short hike to the delightful small Marian Village hike. We start from Huaraz and walk through the newly developed suburb of Nueva Florida and then follow quiet local lanes passing by small farms and local homes for 40 minutes to an hour to the village of Marian which is tucked in beneath the mountains behind Huaraz. From the village plaza there is an amazing view of the massive snow covered mountain of Ranrapalca.

On the return from Marian to Huaraz we follow an old Inca pathway and weave through narrow lanes passing by traditional local homes, small farms and trees and we have a glimpse of the traditional way of life.

Why Choose the Marian Hike for Acclimatization?

If you have just arrived in Huaraz (3,050m), rushing into a hard trek can be risky. The hike to Marian and the surrounding hills offers a gentle elevation gain, typically reaching up to 3,800m (12,467 ft).

Unlike the steep and rocky climbs of Churup, the trails here are wider and pass through rolling hills. This allows your body to produce more red blood cells naturally without the physical stress of a technical climb. Best of all, this is an “off the beaten path” experience—you are more likely to meet local shepherds than other tourists.

Scenery & Culture: The "Real" Peru

This tour is a photographer’s dream. As you ascend through the village of Marian, you leave the city noise behind and enter a world of green pastures, adobe houses, and flowing canals.

The star of the show is the towering Nevado Ranrapalca, which dominates the skyline directly ahead. You will also enjoy panoramic views of the Callejón de Huaylas valley stretching out below. It’s a unique opportunity to interact with friendly locals, see traditional farming methods, and experience the quiet majesty of the Andes away from the crowds.
