If you are looking to escape the crowds of Laguna 69 and experience the quiet, authentic side of the Andes, the Macashca Hills hike is Huaraz’s best-kept secret. Located just southeast of the city, this trekking route takes you through a living landscape of traditional farming communities.

This isn’t just a hike; it’s a cultural immersion. As you ascend the green hills above the village of Macashca, you are rewarded with a unique close-up view of the massive Nevado Huantzán (6395m), the “K2 of the Andes,” dominating the skyline in a way few tourists ever see.

Escape from the regular tourist destinations with lovely hill walk close to Huaraz. We start with a short drive into the agricultural Macashca Valley where you can also see the small hydroelectric scheme. We hike climbing steadily up a large grass covered hillside through open farmland to reach a spectacular saddle at 4200m with fantastic views of the snowcapped Cordillera Blanca peaks, Huascaran, the dry Cordillera Negra and over Huaraz. An excellent acclimatisation hike with not much road travel needed.

Off the Beaten Path: Solitude & Culture

Unlike the popular national park trails, the path to Macashca is quiet and peaceful. Here, the “traffic” consists of local shepherds moving their sheep and farmers tending to potato and quinoa fields using traditional methods that haven’t changed for centuries.

It is a rare opportunity to see the real rural Peru. The locals are friendly and often wear traditional colorful Andean clothing. For photographers and culture lovers, this interaction is often the highlight of the trip, offering a stark contrast to the busy backpacker hub of Huaraz.

The Guardian of the South: Views of Huantzán

While most day hikes focus on the northern peaks (like Huascarán), Macashca gives you a front-row seat to the southern giant of the Cordillera Blanca: Nevado Huantzán.

From the top of the Macashca hills (approx. 3,800m – 4,000m), the view is breathtaking. You see the formidable vertical walls of Huantzán rising dramatically above the valley. You also get panoramic views back towards Huaraz and the Cordillera Negra to the west, making it a spectacular spot for landscape photography.

Your Guided Tour Itinerary

This is a flexible half-day to full-day adventure.

The Drive: We take a short 30-minute private drive from Huaraz to the rural village of Macashca.
The Hike: We begin ascending the hills on community trails. The terrain is grassy and open, with a steady but manageable incline perfect for acclimatization.
The Summit: We reach a scenic lookout point on the ridge. Here, we enjoy our box lunch while taking in the 360-degree views of the valley and the glaciers.
The Descent: We loop back down through the village, enjoying the fresh mountain air before our transport takes us back to Huaraz.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Macashca Hills hike difficult?

It is considered a moderate hike. While the terrain is not technical (mostly grassy slopes and dirt trails), you will be hiking up to around 4,000m (13,000 ft). It is a great workout to prepare your lungs for harder treks.

How long is the hike?

We usually hike for about 3 to 4 hours round trip. The pace is relaxed, focusing on enjoying the scenery and the rural atmosphere.

Will I see other tourists?

Very few, if any. Macashca is not on the standard “gringo trail.” It is an exclusive experience for those who want to get away from the tour buses.
