Huaraz Ridges & Views: The Pukaventana Skyline Hike

Time:

5 to 6 hours hiking

Grade:

Moderate to Hard

Maximum altitude:

3750m

Hiking distance approx:

9kms

You don’t need to travel hours into the national park to find world-class mountain scenery. The Huaraz Ridges hike (visiting the famous Pukaventana) offers the single best panoramic view of the Cordillera Blanca, located right on the edge of the city.

This scenic half-day adventure takes you along the high ridgeline overlooking Huaraz. It is the ultimate acclimatization hike for your first day, offering a bird’s-eye view of the urban life below and an unobstructed front-row seat to giants like Huascarán, Huandoy, and Vallunaraju.

Our Huaraz Ridges & Views day hike follows along a series of undulating open hill ridges with vast views over the City of Huaraz & surrounds, the expansive valley of Callenjon de Huaylas and across the chain of snow capped mountain of the Cordillera Blanca. We start with a short car ride of 10 minutes to the trail start. From here we have a gradual but not too steep hike up a good path of about 2 hours to reach the top of the crest from where we will be treated to incredible open views of Huaraz and the surrounding mountains. We then wander along the undulating ridge and eventually reach a saddle with a high point of 3750m from where we will descend and return back to Huaraz.

Pukaventana: The "Window" to the Andes

The highlight of this trek is reaching Pukaventana (Quechua for “Red Window”). This unique geological formation features a natural rock arch carved by wind and time into the reddish cliffs.

It isn’t just a rock formation; it’s a natural picture frame. Looking through the window, you can capture stunning photos of the snow-capped peaks in the distance. The trail also passes by the Rataquenua Cross, a famous local landmark that watches over the city.

The Perfect "Day 1" Acclimatization

If you have just arrived in Huaraz from Lima, your body needs time to adjust to the altitude (3,050m). This hike is the perfect solution.

  • Zero Travel Time: The trailhead is just 15 minutes from the city center, so no long drives.

  • Active Recovery: You hike up to approx. 3,500m – 3,800m. This gentle elevation gain stimulates acclimatization without the exhaustion of a full-day trek like Laguna 69.

  • Flexible Pace: Since it’s a private or small group tour close to town, we can adjust the speed to match your comfort level perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the hike to Pukaventana difficult?

It is considered an easy to moderate hike. While there is an uphill section to reach the ridge, the path is accessible for beginners and active families.

While it is close to the city, the trail network can be confusing, and some isolated areas are best visited with a local who knows the route and security situation. We recommend a guided tour for a safe and stress-free experience.

On a clear day, you will see the most famous peaks of the range, including Huascarán (6768m), Huandoy, Chopicalqui, Ranrapalca, and the pyramid of Vallunaraju.
