Cordillera Negra Hike: The Balcony of the Andes

Time:

2 or 3 hours hike and then we take a car back to Huaraz

Grade:

Easy Hike (Car Option)

Maximum altitude:

4225m

Hiking distance approx:

10kms

A delightful easy hike which offers spectacular views over the entire range of the snow capped Cordillera Blanca. First we travel on a new road which winds it way up through many small villages to the pass Punta Callan at 4225m from where there are unequalled views of the peaks, glaciers and valleys of the Cordillera Blanca.. We then hike down, easily follow local village trails all the way down hill, passing by traditional village houses and farms and can enjoy seeing the local traditional way of life. In July and August it is harvest time and everyone is busy harvesting and gathering crops. It is an easy 2 hour walk down to a village where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Huaraz.

For those not wishing to hike, we can take the car to the saddle where we can appreciate the amazing views of the Cordillera Blanca mountains, of Huaraz and also out to the Pacific coast and then return to Huaraz.

The Best Seat in the House: Unmatched Views

While treks like Laguna 69 take you to the base of the mountains, the Cordillera Negra puts you on top of the world looking across the valley. The contrast is striking: you walk along dry, high-altitude trails with native flora, gazing across the lush Callejón de Huaylas valley towards the wall of ice and snow on the horizon.

This is a photographer’s paradise. Whether you choose a morning hike or a sunset tour, the lighting on the glaciers creates a spectacle you cannot see from anywhere else. It’s the only place where you can capture the sheer scale of Peru’s highest mountains in one frame.

High Altitude, Low Effort (Perfect Acclimatization)

One of the secrets of the Cordillera Negra is that we can drive very high—often up to Punta Callan (4,225m) or similar passes—before we even start walking.

This means you get all the benefits of high-altitude exposure to kickstart your acclimatization, but the hiking itself is mostly flat or downhill along the ridge. It’s an excellent strategy to prepare your body for tougher treks without exhausting your legs. You’ll enjoy the fresh air and wide-open spaces with minimal physical strain.

Itinerary

Your Guided Tour Itinerary

We offer this as a flexible half-day tour, popular for both morning starts and sunset sessions.

  • The Drive: We depart Huaraz for a scenic 1-hour drive up the switchbacks of the Cordillera Negra, watching the views get better with every turn.

  • The Ridge Walk: Upon reaching the pass (approx 4,200m), we begin our hike along the undulating ridge. The trail offers 360-degree views, including glimpses of the Pacific Ocean on a very clear day to the west, and the Cordillera Blanca to the east.

  • Cultural Touch: We often pass local shepherds with their sheep and see native high-Andean crops like potatoes and quinoa.

  • Descent: After soaking in the views, our transport meets us for the return drive to Huaraz.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there snow on the Cordillera Negra?

No, the “Negra” (Black) range is free of glaciers and permanent snow, which is why it is named that way. This makes the weather generally warmer and drier than on the snowy “Blanca” side, although it can still be windy at the top.

This is considered an easy to moderate hike. While the altitude is high (over 4,000m), the terrain is not steep. It is suitable for almost anyone with a basic fitness level and is a great option for families.

Yes! The Cordillera Negra is famous for its sunset tours. Watching the sun go down behind you while the last light turns the snowy peaks of the Cordillera Blanca pink and orange (alpenglow) is an unforgettable experience.
